Change in Number of Pay Periods in the 9-month Academic Year |
We are writing to inform you that effective with the 2007-2008 academic year,
the number of pay periods for individuals on academic contracts and academic
work schedules will be reduced from 22 to 20. Total annualized compensation
for academic faculty will not change.
As a result of this change, the first academic pay period will be a week
before classes begin and the last academic pay period will end the week final
exams are completed. The first paycheck of the academic year will be issued
on August 31, 2007 and the last one will be issued on May 23, 2008. This
change will have an impact on all faculty, non-faculty appointed
professionals, graduate assistants/associates and classified staff who serve
on an academic year basis. Fiscal appointments are unaffected.
This change is being made to coordinate pay dates with contract dates, reduce
conflicts with supplemental compensation funded by sponsored projects, and
ensure the timely completion of federally required employment forms.
Nine-month pay periods are the norm in the higher education community and
this adjustment will align our practices with those of our peers.
Because paychecks will be somewhat larger, individuals may wish to consider
modifying their tax withholding using
Employee Link,
or enrolling in a tax-qualified supplemental
voluntary retirement plan.
A campus-wide implementation group, including representatives from CCIT, the
Council of Academic Business Officers, the Financial Services Office, the
Graduate College, Human Resources, the Office of the General Counsel,
Sponsored Projects, Systems Control, the Office of the Vice President for
Research, and several operating departments, has taken into consideration a
variety of operational issues to ensure a smooth transition. Individuals who
serve on an academic year basis and their business offices are encouraged to
visit the Human Resources web site
for comprehensive information and implementation guidelines to help understand
this change.
