Prestigious Awards Leave - Appointed Personnel

Definition

Enables appointed personnel to accept prestigious external fellowships or awards for research or creative activity that does not provide the recipient's normal full salary during the period of the award.

Eligibility

  • The prestigious external fellowship or award is included on the list of awards developed by the recipient's college.
  • The assignment is in the best interests of the University.
  • Funds are available within the college to support both the University portion of the employee's salary and to cover instructional duties comparable to those the individual would have been assigned.
  • Individual will return to the University following the leave for a period of further service equal to the length of the leave.

Procedure

  • Employee submits a letter to department head indicating reason for the leave and the leave schedule.
  • The leave is approved by the department head, dean and Provost.
  • If approved, the department forwards the paperwork to Human Resources Leave Management Team.
  • The University provides a matching value up to a maximum of 50% of the faculty member's salary during the period of the leave in order for the recipient to be able to retain their full University salary. Funds must be available within the college in order to support both the University's portion of the individual's salary and to cover instructional duties comparable to those the individual would have been assigned.

What Happens to Your Benefits?

  • This leave has no impact on the employee's benefits as long as the employee maintains a .5 FTE.

FAQs

Q: The prestigious award that I received is not on the list maintained by my college. Is there anything that I can do?

A: Yes. A faculty member who receives a prestigious award not included on the list may make a petition to add that award to the list.

Q: How does this award affect my status at the University?

A: The timing of sabbatical leaves and retention, tenure, continuing status, and promotion reviews will not be affected by externally supported research assignments.
