Excused Unpaid Absence
Qualifying Reasons and Eligibility

When an absence is not covered by Family and Medical Leave or other paid time (Sick Time, or Vacation Time), a supervisor can decide whether approval of an excused unpaid absence is appropriate and can be supported (See Business Considerations for Excused Unpaid Absence). Factors to consider for an employee’s eligibility are as follows:

Qualifying Reasons ← and → Employee Eligibility
(all must be present)
  • Departmental request process is followed.
  • The period of unpaid absence will be 28 or less unpaid calendar days.
  • Supervisor decides to approve unpaid absence.

  • Any Appointed Personnel or Classified Staff

When the employee does not qualify for an excused unpaid absence, other absence options may be explored at the supervisor’s discretion – see main flow chart.
