University Employees Unaffected by United Healthcare Sanctions

The Arizona Department of Insurance has sanctioned United Healthcare for their fully-insured, managed care HMO plan regarding violations of state law governing: (a) member appeals of denied services and claims; (b) timely payments to providers; (c) provider grievances; and, (d) record keeping and documentation requirements. The press release is located at http://www.id.state.az.us/press/press06-03.pdf.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEES: The sanctions and concerns by the Arizona Department of Insurance do not reflect on the Benefit Options self-funded plan provided to State employees, University employees and retirees. The State’s self-funded plan was designed with strict appeals provisions and time frames, and compliance is regularly reported and monitored by the Benefits staff of the Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA). During February, 2006, the ADOA Benefits office conducted a customer satisfaction survey and survey respondents enrolled with United Healthcare reported 98% overall satisfaction with the health plan.
