Commonly Used Acronyms and Terms at the University of Arizona

Business & Administrative

AP Appointed Personnel Collectively refers to faculty members, professional staff (academic and service) and administrators
CS Classified Staff Any employee whose position is classified under the Arizona Universities Personnel System
ERE Employee Related Expense The expenses the University incurs on behalf of an employee in addition to salary expenses. ERE is comprised of FICA, Retirement, Unemployment Compensation, Worker's Compensation, Liability Insurance, Health/Dental/Life Insurance, and Dependent Care Assistance
ETR Employee Time Record The University's official form for time keeping purposes
ETE Extended Temporary Employment Classified staff positions established for a period of six months to twenty-four months. ETE employees are benefits-eligible, but are not placed in lay-off status at the completion of their assignment.
FRS Financial Records System Comprehensive information on policies and procedures relating to payroll, travel, purchasing, reimbursements, etc.
FTE Full-Time Equivalent A numerical designator for an appointment based on 100% for full-time. An FTE for a full-time employee is 1.00. (An individual working for 20 hours per week would be employed in a .50FTE.)
GA Graduate Assistants and Graduate Associates Graduate students conduct research and perform assigned related activities
GAT Graduate Assistant in Teaching Graduate students who teach or perform other assigned tasks
HF Hiring Form Form completed by departments to initiate the hiring process for new employees
ITQ International Tax Questionnaire Used to determine eligibility for Federal, State, and Social Security tax exemptions, or to prove the employee is a resident alien, for tax purposes, based on substantial presence in the United States.
MQ Minimum Qualifications Education and experience that an employee must possess in order to fulfill the essential functions of the position
NEO New Employee Orientation An orientation meeting that provides employees the opportunity to learn general information about the University
PAF Personnel Action Form A document generated by the Personal Services Operating System (PSOS) that contains detailed information about an employee and the funding for the employee's position.
PCN Position Control Number The line number to which the position is assigned in the operating budget for the department and the name of the person filling the position.
PI Principal Investigator The person assigned responsibility for program and budgetary management of a grant or contract.
PSOS Personnel Services Operating System Personal service encumbrances; Personal service encumbrance revisions; State account budget loads and revisions; biweekly payroll expense; payroll adjustments.
PUTR Previously Unreported Time Report (form) Use to report all regular hours, leave taken, and any paid overtime incurred (if applicable) worked in prior pay periods that have not been paid
RBC Request for Budget Change (form) To provide a method for requesting budget changes on state and local accounts
RF Recruitment Form Completed to conduct a search for classified staff and appointed personnel positions
SIS Student Information System University business system that maintains student records, receipts, financial aid, grades, scholarships and refund information
SRA Salary Reduction Agreement An agreement which results in a reduction of salary and the allocation of such reduction to the be used for services
UIS University Information Services Database warehouse used to access and generate information from a variety of university business systems (PSOS, FRS and SIS)
UPI University Physicians, Inc. Group of health care providers housed in the UMC complex

ADOA Arizona Department of Administration Administrator of most state personnel matters including benefits Administration for University and Sate employees
ABOR Arizona Board of Regents The governing body for the State of Arizona's public university system which includes the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University
ALIS Arizona legislative Information services A legal site to search for Arizona Revised Statutes, bills, budgets, members of the legislature, press releases, ombudsman, committees, floor calendar, posting sheets, library and archives, and others
APOC Appointed Personnel Organization Committee The formal, elected, representative body for the Appointed Personnel Organization
AWF Association for Women Faculty The Association for Women Faculty is a campus organization composed of University of Arizona women faculty, academic professionals, postdoctoral and graduate students. The goal is to achieve a campus climate which fosters the careers of women faculty and academic professionals.
BPW Business Professional Women Organizations whose objectives include achieving equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information.
BETA University-wide networking organization of office professionals that provides opportunities for members to achieve and enhance their professional and personal growth Membership is open to any person holding an Administrative Assistant, Administrative Associate, Business Manager, Business Manager, Senior, Executive Assistant, Office Specialist, Senior, Office Supervisor, Program Coordinator, and Program Coordinator, Senior, position
CSW Commission on Status of Women Work to strengthen the University of Arizona by advocating an inclusive and just campus community by overcoming impediments to the full participation and achievement of women and other underrepresented groups
DAPS Decision and Planning Support This unit is responsible for institutional research and student research information and analysis.
FS Faculty Senate Representatives in faculty governance are elected by the General Faculty, or by a constituency within the General faculty, to serve on the Faculty Senate
NIH National Institute of Health One of the world's foremost medical research centers and the federal focal point for medical research in the U.S.
NSF National Science Foundation The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent agency of the U.S. Government and promotes the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense.
SAC Staff Advisory Council Fosters and enhances communication between the classified staff and the University community. Provides a forum for discussing and defining the role of classified staff in the University. Represents and advocates concerns within the University community and statewide; Ensures inclusion of classified staff on University committees.
UCAT University Compensation Advisory Team Identify, prioritize and study issues relating to compensation and benefits for all University employee categories.

TRI-U (UA, ASU, NAU) The three Arizona Universities that form the state university system and are governed by the Arizona Board of Regents
OGC Office of the General Counsel In-house counsel providing legal advice, education and representation for the University.
UMC University Medical Center A private, non-profit hospital located at the Arizona Health Science Center, adjacent to the U of A.  Affiliation with the University enables UMC to take a lead role in offering the latest treatments as well as routine medial care and wellness programs.
UTC University Teacher Center Offers programs and resources to enhance the teaching efforts and activities of faculty members
