We are pleased to announce that the 90-day wait for benefits will be lifted in September. This change is a result of language included in HB2002
, a budget bill passed by the Special Session of the Legislature and signed by Governor Jan Brewer.
WHEN IS THIS CHANGE EFFECTIVE?
The effective date of this provision is September 12, 2013. Based on UA pay period dates, this means that benefits for all employees hired on or after September 2 will now be effective on the first day of the pay period following a completed benefits enrollment.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON EMPLOYEES HIRED PRIOR TO SEPTEMBER 2, 2013?
The effective date of benefits for these employees will depend on when their enrollments are completed. Employees have 31 days from the date of hire to complete the benefits enrollment.
- For enrollments completed on or before September 15, benefits will be effective on September 16.
- For enrollments completed on or after September 16, benefits will be effective the first day of the pay period following the completed enrollment.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS FOR EMPLOYEES HIRED PRIOR TO SEPTEMBER 2, 2013?
The following options are available to employees hired during this time period to help bridge any waiting period for benefits:
- Employees hired on or before August 2 will continue to have the option of selecting the Fixed Benefit Plan or the Transition Allowance. This is the same process that has been in place for employees who have been subjected to the 90-day waiting period.
- Employees hired between August 5 and September 1 will receive a portion of the Central Transition Allowance (August and/or September amounts only, not to exceed $333.34 each month). The Fixed Benefit Plan will no longer be an available option. A revised Transition Allowance Election Form for employees hired during this time period can be found on the Human Resources website. Final payment requests for the Transition Allowance must be submitted and approved by October 10, 2013. For instructions on submitting the payment request, click here.
