Purpose of Classification: |
| Prepares microscopic slides of tissue and bone marrow for pathological study. Assists the pathologist in preparing for dissection of surgical specimens. |
Distinguishing Characteristics: |
| This is first in a series of two classifications and is distinguished from the Histotechnologist, Senior in that incumbents do not have coordinating or quality control responsibilities. Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous material. |
Example of Duties: |
- Identifies and records tissue samples.
- Processes tissue samples by dehydration, embedding, cutting, staining, special staining procedures, decalcification and frozen cryostat method.
- Maintains slide storage and filing systems.
- Assists the pathologist in preparing for dissection of surgical specimens.
- Requisitions supplies and maintains inventory for laboratory.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: |
- Knowledge of principles and practices of tissue processing and slide development.
- Skill in maintenance of slide filing systems.
- Ability to effectively communicate.

Minimum Qualifications: |
- Two years of college with courses in Biology and Chemistry or eligibility for registration as a Histotechnologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) AND one year of experience sectioning and staining tissue and bone marrow; OR,
- Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
