Purpose of Classification: |
| Interprets and transliterates spoken language into Sign Language to facilitate communication between deaf/hard of hearing individuals and hearing individuals. |
Distinguishing Characteristics: |
| This is the first in a series of three classifications and provides Sign Language interpretive services to students, faculty, staff and campus visitors in academic and University-affiliated settings. It is distinguished from the Interpreter/Transliterator, Senior, which works in the most demanding academic, medical, legal and business settings. |
Example of Duties: |
- Interprets/transliterates in a classroom setting.
- Interprets/transliterates for students in a variety of classroom-related activities.
- Interprets/transliterates for campus personnel and community members for University sponsored events.
- Interprets/transliterates for prospective students.
- Develops technical sign materials in preparation for classroom and other assignments and may be required to respond extemporaneously in differing academic disciplines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: |
- Knowledge and skill with various methods of expressive and voice interpreting/transliterating (Consecutive, Simultaneous, Manually Coded English, Pidgin Signed English/Contact Varieties, American Sign Language).
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in standard practices of interpreting and transliterating.
- Knowledge of standard practices in interpreting/transliterating at the post secondary level.
- Knowledge of cultural aspects of deafness and cross-cultural mediation.
- Ability to effectively communicate.

Minimum Qualifications: |
- Currently licensed in the state of Arizona as an Interpreter for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing.
