    Title: Optician Assistant
    Pay Grade: 22
    Pay Range
    (min/mid/max):
    $21,124/$26,040/$31,961
    FLSA:Non-exempt

    Purpose of Classification:
    Assists Optician by routine fabrication and testing of precision optical components.

    Distinguishing Characteristics:
    This is first in a series of three classifications. It is distinguished from the Optician in that incumbents work under direct supervision to learn the craft.

    Example of Duties:
    • Performs layout of raw stock for sawing, edging and generating to dimension and curve.
    • Assists in operation of machines to lap generated glass to proper curve, thickness and surface finish in preparation for polishing to prescribed final specifications.
    • Laps and polishes optical components made of metals, glasses and crystals to final spherical or flat figure meeting tight figure tolerance.
    • Tests optical components to determine conformance to design specifications.
    • Cleans, lubricates and performs routine maintenance on optical machinery.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of shop principals, practices and techniques.
    • Skill in using hand and power tools.
    • Ability to effectively communicate.

      Minimum Qualifications:
      • Two years of experience cutting and polishing lenses, mirrors, flats and prisms; OR,
      • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
