    Title: Central Plant Supervisor
    Pay Grade: 43

    $36,440/$45,270/$55,838
    FLSA:Exempt

    Purpose of Classification:
    Supervises the central plant heating and cooling operation to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

    Distinguishing Characteristics:
    This is fifth in a series of five classifications. This classification typically reports to an Assistant Director of Facilities Management.

    Example of Duties:
    • Supervises two or more full-time employees, or their equivalent, on a regular basis.
    • Makes decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion and termination of employees, or makes related recommendations that are given particular weight.
    • Evaluates requests for repair and modifications of central plant equipment and systems; determines the causes of malfunctions, the extensiveness of repair or modification needs, the procedures and methods of corrective actions and the cost feasibility, timetables and priority in terms of central plant capabilities, capacities and usage.
    • Coordinates the completion of repair/modification projects with contractors, vendors and maintenance support services.
    • Develops long and short term plans pertaining to manpower, equipment and maintenance project needs.
    • Prepares specifications and designs for the repair, modification and/or installation of central plant equipment and systems.
    • Monitors maintenance and repair work and maintains accurate daily log and recordkeeping for the plant water laboratory, the high quality water distiller and emergency generator, in addition to the boilers, refrigeration machines, pumps, towers and plant auxiliaries.
    • Prepares capital and operating budgets for the central plant.
    • Coordinates with engineers, suppliers, contractors and other related personnel concerning existing and new equipment, components and/or parts related to the central plant operations to insure objectives and needs of the central plant are met; initiates purchase requisitions.
    • Coordinates with management of other departments in reviewing their facility utility requirements as it relates to central plant operations in terms of equipment, systems and usage.
    • Prepares various reports pertaining to central plant operations and utility consumption for other university buildings.
    • Interprets university and department policies to assigned personnel and enforces safety regulations and adherence to proper codes and standards.
    • Programs control computer with load information.
    • Inspects central plant equipment for proper and safe operation.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of operation, maintenance and repair of high and low pressure heating systems, cooling systems and power plants.
    • Knowledge of boiler and pressure vessel design, construction, maintenance and safety.
    • Knowledge of management principles, practices and techniques.
    • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and repair of power, heating and cooling systems.
    • Skill in managing others and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
    • Ability to effectively communicate.

      Minimum Qualifications:
      • Nine years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of high and low pressure heating and cooling systems; OR,
      • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
      • Some positions in this classification may require Chloroflourocarbons Certification upon employment.
      • Some positions in this classification may require Arizona driver's license upon employment.
