Purpose of Classification: |
| Repairs and maintains elevators, dumbwaiters and wheel chair lifts and other related electrical and hydraulic devices. |
Distinguishing Characteristics: |
| This is a journey level position. This is first in a series of three classifications. This classification typically reports to the Elevator Mechanic, Lead. Working conditions - restricted movement, dirty environment; lifts or carries heavy objects. |
Example of Duties: |
- Investigates problems of an electric, mechanical and/or hydraulic nature related to the operation of elevators, dumbwaiters and wheelchair lifts, determines their cause and makes the necessary repairs to resolve the problem.
- Conducts preventive maintenance and inspections of elevators, dumbwaiters and related devices on a scheduled basis to ensure their effective and efficient operation and conformance to safety regulations and OSHA requirements.
- Develops new and/or modifies existing tools, equipment and components to improve the operation, testing, maintenance and safety of elevators.
- Designs modifications in existing elevator equipment to meet changing needs and specific usage requirements such as computerized control circuits.
- Performs annual tests to ensure the proper operation of safety devices.
- Assists in determining the suitability of present elevator equipment, proposed modifications and new equipment.
- Requisitions parts and materials required for service and repair.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: |
- Knowledge of elevator repair and maintenance techniques.
- Knowledge of OSHA requirements.
- Skill in the repair and maintenance of elevators and related equipment.
- Ability to effectively communicte.

Minimum Qualifications: |
- Six years of elevator repair and maintenance experience; OR,
- Completion of a four year federally approved technical training program in elevator repair and maintenance; OR,
- Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
