    Title: Cryogenics Technician

    Purpose of Classification:
    Prepares cylinders and tanks to be filled with cryogenic liquids and gases, for distribution to various campus clients and users in the scientific community.

    Distinguishing Characteristics:
    This is first in a series of three classifications. Incumbents perform a full range of Cryogenics related duties as described below. This classification is distinguished from the Cryogenics Technician, Senior classification in that the Senior position has lead responsibility for day to day activities and provides input to the Cryogenics Supervisor on the progress and developmental needs of the Cryogenics Technician(s).

    Example of Duties:
    • Fills orders and issues cryogenics products and supplies per client request, and documents transactions.
    • Prepares request for supplies, computes costs, and keeps records of the Cryogenics Facilitys supply inventory.
    • Assists with the transfer of cryogenics liquids from the large helium system or nitrogen tank to smaller cryogenic containers for distribution.
    • Loads and unloads cryogenic products such as argon, helium and nitrogen in liquid and gas forms, dry ice and liquid carbon dioxide.
    • Delivers and retrieves empty cylinders, valve connectors, replacement fittings and cryogenic supplies from campus locations or external vendors.
    • Performs preventative maintenance on the helium system, the cryogenics gas filling station, helium compressors, high pressure dewars, cylinders and vacuum pumps which includes: changing fluids, purging, pre-cooling, and cleaning various cryogenics systems.
    • Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment including electrical wiring, installation of switches, fuses, and high-pressure plumbing for the helium compressors. Diagnoses mechanical problems of cryogenic systems and containers such as removing ice plugs, detecting leaks, fixing and/or replacing relief valves on cryogenic vessels.
    • Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks or dollies to move cryogenic containers or reorganize inventory.
    • Uses computerized system to generate invoices, receipts and track inventory.
    • Informs supervisor of the need for additional standard stock items or cryogenics products.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of the physical properties of cryogenic liquids and gases.
    • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles and practices.
    • Skill in the installation, adjustment and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and compressors.
    • Skill in reading and understanding schematics of electrical circuits.
    • Ability to communicate effectively.

      Minimum Qualifications:
      • Four years experience working with cryogenic equipment and products, or plumbing and/or electromechanical repairs, OR
      • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by the Human Resources Department.
      • Possession of a valid Arizona Class D drivers license upon employment.
      • Possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class C, with a hazardous materials endorsement, upon employment.
      • Possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class B, with air brake endorsement in order to drive a 35000 Gross Weight vehicle, upon employment.
      • Possession of forklift certification.
