Purpose of Classification: |
| Costume technician services for various theatre productions, band, basketball and twirler activities. Position will provide construction, alteration, tailoring and pattern drafting costumes. |
Distinguishing Characteristics: |
| This is first in a series of three classifications. It is distinguished from the Costume Designer in that the incumbent's major responsibilities are to construct or sew costumes. This classification reports to the Costume Shop Manager. |
Example of Duties: |
- Stitches/constructs costumes for university productions.
- Alters existing garments for use in productions.
- Cuts fabric from patterns prepared by Costume Shop Manager or other assigned Draper to be used for costumes for productions.
- Performs fittings of existing or under construction garments on actors in productions.
- Makes patterns or alters commercial patterns to be used to construct garments for productions.
- Supervises student stitchers on costume construction projects for productions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: |
- Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of theatrical costume construction.
- Knowledge of basic sewing and pattern alteration techniques.
- Skill in designing patterns, cutting, sewing, dying and fitting costumes
- Skill in using advanced clothing construction techniques, including but not limited to boned bodices, tailored men's wear, period garment construction techniques, etc.
- Ability to effectively communicate.

Minimum Qualifications: |
- Two years experience in costume design, construction, alteration and repair of costumes.
