
Guidelines for Recruiting and Hiring Development Officers
The University of Arizona (UA) maintains a close working relationship with the University of Arizona Foundation (UAF) regarding UA Development. A formal legal agreement between the two organizations – the Development Management Services Agreement -- details the UAF services to be provided to the UA and how development efforts on behalf of the UA will be co-managed. This agreement includes outlining the UA/UAF dual reporting relationship by which all development employees abide. Because the UAF has shared responsibility to assist colleges and departments in all areas related to development, the UAF human resources manager plays an essential role and is to be actively engaged in all aspects of employee management, from recruiting and hiring to performance reviews, and if appropriate, terminations.
All recruitment postings/position descriptions for development positions and all offer letters to successful development candidates must include the following language (noted in italics):
Language to be used in career track posting or position description for a development officer:
• The Director of Development (or other appropriate development title) is responsible for managing and directing major gift fundraising in support of (insert college/dept). This position is jointly managed by (insert college/dept) and the Development Office, which is managed under contract by the University of Arizona Foundation.
Offer letter language to be included in the UA HR template for appointed personnel development positions:
• On behalf of the University of Arizona and in accordance with the Development Management Services Agreement, I am pleased to offer you the position of ________________________for the University of Arizona (insert college/dept), under the Conditions of Professional Service, Chapter 4 of the University Handbook for Appointed Personnel and Section 6-301 of the Arizona Board of Regents Policy Manual). This appointment is a fiscal year-to-year appointment and is subject to management by the University of Arizona Foundation as specified in the Development Management Services Agreement dated July 1, 2005.
Additionally, all offer letters to the successful development candidate should be jointly signed by dean/department head and the UAF president, with a noted copy of the offer letter addressed to the appropriate UA dean or UA vice president.
Questions regarding funding or budget for development positions should be directed to the President’s Office to the attention of the Assistant Vice President for Finance and Administration.
