Selecting the Best Information Technology (IT) Classification

The University of Arizona Classified Staff Job Descriptions are generic, and are meant to provide a broad perspective of the work, rather than the work of a specific position. Here are some tips to help match the work of a particular position to the appropriate new Information Technology (IT) classification.

  • Review the duties currently assigned to the position, using a performance appraisal, past job posting, or current specific-position description.
  • Comparing two sections of the classifications will assist in matching the job to the appropriate classification.
    • The “Purpose of the Classification” explains the job in a few sentences.
    • The “Distinguishing Characteristics” of each classification explain the differences between levels in a job series, and between different jobs.
  • Once you have narrowed down the options to just a few classifications, review the new classification duties to confirm the duties are reflective of the work.
    • These generic classifications will not include every duty of every position.
    • Many employees perform duties from a few different job descriptions. Find the description that BEST DESCRIBES the work being performed, which will usually describe more than 50 % of the employee’s duties.
    • If the position’s duties are split closely between two classifications, select the classification that aligns with the primary reason the job exists
  • Many IT positions at the college/division level do not have a primary duty, and the duties are necessarily spread across several technical functions. A new classification series of Information Technology Support Analysts was created specifically for those positions.
  • Once you have identified the appropriate new IT classification, compare the Minimum Qualifications with the current qualifications of an employee who is to be reclassified. An employee must meet the Minimum Qualifications in order to be reclassified.
  •  Human Resources Consulting Services or HR at AHSC is available to help managers and supervisors identify appropriate classifications.
